Space series

The concept of space is the current focus of my work. When I paused to think about what the word space meant to me I was surprised by the many variants: The shape between objects; a memory of place; what is left when something is taken away; infinity; a lapse of time; nothingness; endless possibility or contemplation… So I’m busy exploring these ideas in more depth.

These pieces explore space as change; time between key moments; shift in memory; an image found within another. I find that my colour palette becomes much softer as lines blur, with textures and simple mark making taking the lead in telling the story. Suspended materials create shadows - transient shifts of time and space. Translucent colours intersect creating something else in the space between.

The Thaw

The space and shape of landscape definitely sees my roots in Graphic Design come to the fore. Experimenting with bold colour palettes leads to some pairings that surprise and excite me but really tell the story of how these landscapes fit together. I have become drawn to particular shapes that change in the space - a cloud, the parceling of land into fields, sun or moonlight - and express these in suspended mesh - the images changing from different angles as the viewer looks on.

Still working with abstract geometrics the pieces below followed a trip to Hong Kong.

A Place to Settle considers the extreme divide between rich and poor. For some life takes on a mantle of certainty, extravagance and energy. Whereas others, as an example the live in maids have no real place that is home. They congregate with each other to enjoy their time of on Sundays in parks, by the waterside or even in bus stations. It’s a great celebration but life is full of uncertainties.

Space to Think shows my reflections of the excitement of livinging such a vibrant and energetic society but recognising relief in finding tranquil green space or time alone to enjoy the quiet.

In these pieces vibrant colours reflect energy, wealth and modern society but suspended shapes, fragile netting and images below suggest the need to consider other contrasting possibilities.

Geometrics series

I have always had a love of bold prints - especially retro textile designs from 1950s and 60s. This year I started to keep a pattern book, recording designs that caught my eye and adapting them. My Geometrics series has been inspired by this. The very graphic shapes led me to include screen printed images alongside other materials and techniques, giving depth and movement to the work . I also moved away from the 2 dimensional nature of original designs by creating raised tiles and suspending images within a frame. Wire skeletons of the leaf designs were used to link the graphic shapes back to their original delicate forms in the natural world. My aim was to keep the integrity of the original designs but reimagine them with a contemporary twist.

Colour Splash series

Its all about the colour really! These are a series of mini works which are purely self-indulgent and such a pleasure for me to make. They allow me to experiment with ideas and processes and see where the thoughts take me. Suspending them within the mount gives them a sense of catching a moment - like a perfect bubble that could suddenly be gone.

Fragile series

With this series I did a lot of work experimenting with Geli plate printing and loved the effects I got with monochrome prints. The detail and unpredictable effects of ink nuances have a beautiful quality - like etchings. It has been a new challenge to combine the delicate nature of these prints with collage and other media. I used these effects to investigate a more subtle view of our world as it changes through passages of time .
